Deeper Competition Emerges as Schools Ranked 401–500 Show Strong Performance in UCE 2025

KAMPALA — The Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) 2025 results continue to reveal a highly competitive and expanding academic landscape, with schools ranked between 401 and 500 demonstrating resilience, consistency, and growing academic strength across the country. While national attention often focuses on the top 100 institutions, this segment of schools provides critical insight into the depth and inclusiveness of Uganda’s education system under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Within this ranking band, several schools have posted strong Grade A performances, with institutions such as St. Pauls College Mbale, St. Janan Luwum SS Kampala, Mulusa Academy Wobulenzi, and St. Francis SS Busunju each registering 31 A grades. These results show that even beyond the elite tier, many schools are producing learners who are achieving at the highest levels of assessment. This reinforces the growing reality that academic excellence is no longer confined to a small group of traditional schools, but is spreading across both urban and semi-urban areas.

A closer look at the data also reveals schools with exceptionally high candidate volumes, an indicator of both accessibility and institutional capacity. For instance, Kagadi SS, Bombo Army SS, Mpanga SS, and Soroti SS (in nearby ranking bands) demonstrate how some institutions are managing large student populations while still maintaining meaningful performance levels. In particular, Bombo Army SS recorded over 4,400 total candidates, highlighting its role as a major academic center within the national system. These figures suggest that many schools in this category are not just centers of excellence, but also hubs of mass education.

The data further shows a strong geographical spread of performing schools. The Central Region, especially Wakiso, Mukono, and Kampala, continues to dominate numerically, with schools such as Mwererwe SS, Mbogo High School, Mugwanya Summit College, Selona SS, and St. Mary’s SS Annex Kitende consistently appearing. However, other regions are also well represented. Western Uganda features schools like Kirembe H/S, Kashenjero Girls SS, and Nyabubare SS, while Eastern Uganda contributes through institutions such as Mother Kevin SS Jinja, Ngoma Standard SS Budaka, and Rainbow High School Budaka. Northern Uganda also remains visible with schools such as Adwari SS (Otuke) and Angal SS (Nebbi). This broad representation signals a steady national balance in educational development.

Another key observation is the distribution of grades across subjects. Many schools in this category show strong numbers in B and C grades, even when A grades are moderate. For example, schools like Mbogo High School, Adwari SS, and Bupadhengo SS demonstrate high volumes of Cs alongside competitive A grades. This reflects the underlying philosophy of the CBC system, which focuses not only on top distinctions but also on ensuring that learners achieve functional competence. In this context, a school with fewer A grades but strong overall performance may still be considered highly effective.

The rankings also highlight a number of emerging institutions that are steadily building academic reputations. Schools such as Angelika SS (Lira), Kasese SS, St. Michael H/S Rugazi, Isaac Newton H/S, and Victoria SS (Wakiso) show promising upward trends. These schools may not yet be widely recognized at the national level, but their performance suggests that they are on a growth trajectory and could move into higher ranking categories in the coming years. This underscores the importance of monitoring not just the top performers, but also the rising schools that are shaping the future of Uganda’s education system.

For parents and learners, this ranking band carries an important message. Many of these schools offer strong academic environments without the intense competition or pressure often associated with top-tier institutions. In some cases, learners may benefit more from these settings due to better teacher attention, manageable class sizes, and more personalized support. Therefore, school selection should not be based solely on prestige, but also on suitability, support systems, and consistency of performance.

From a policy perspective, the schools ranked 401–500 represent a crucial opportunity for targeted improvement. With the right interventions—such as enhanced teacher training, strengthened continuous assessment practices, improved access to learning resources, and integration of digital platforms like KAWA CONNECT—many of these schools could significantly improve their outcomes. Investing in this segment could yield substantial national benefits, as these institutions already have the foundation needed for growth.

Overall, the UCE 2025 rankings for schools 401–500 tell a story of depth, inclusivity, and steady progress. These schools may not dominate headlines, but they are central to Uganda’s education system, supporting thousands of learners and contributing to the country’s academic advancement. As the CBC system continues to mature, this group of schools is likely to become even more important in driving national education outcomes.
