Learner innovation does not begin with asking “Which application should we build?” It starts by understanding people:

1. What problem exists?
Identifying specific pain points in schools, farming, health, or local communities.
2. Who experiences it?
Engaging direct end-users through structured interviews and observation.
3. Can technology help?
Applying the simplest, safest, and most realistic tool that directly solves the issue.

The ICT Club Patron’s Mandate

Patrons confirm institutional approval, safeguard learners, review safety, and ensure learners build the project themselves.

  • Permitted: Asking guiding questions, connecting learners to subject teachers, organizing mock pitch clinics.
  • Prohibited: Writing code, purchasing pre-made apps, inventing test metrics, taking speaking turns during judging.

Mentors & Industry Specialists

Mentors offer industry context, suggest debugging steps, and review architecture under strict safeguarding guidelines.

  • All mentor sessions must be scheduled through school patrons. Private communications with minors are prohibited.
  • Mentors must sign conflict-of-interest disclosures before assessing competitions.

Headteachers & School Administrators

School leaders approve participation, allocate computer laboratory access time, authorize internal pilots, and ensure learner safety during regional/national travel.

No. Learner innovations can be offline databases, SMS tools, multimedia campaigns, digital noticeboards, robotics/hardware circuits, or process automations. The best projects use the simplest realistic technology to solve the problem.
No. Adults may guide, ask questions, and teach concepts, but learners must execute the technical work and be able to demonstrate, explain, and debug every component independently during judging.
Yes, for brainstorming, debugging tips, or learning concepts. However, all AI usage must be formally declared in the project notebook. AI must never be used to fabricate user research or generate entire projects that learners do not understand.
High-performing and high-potential projects receive post-competition mentorship, school piloting assistance, and introductions to innovation hubs and university tech labs for further incubation.
