Bukedea District is a strategic agrarian and commercial gateway situated at the south-eastern edge of the Teso Sub-region in Eastern Uganda. Created in 2006 after being carved out of Kumi District, Bukedea lies along the major Mbale–Soroti highway, approximately 79 kilometres south-east of Soroti City and about 300 kilometres north-east of Kampala. Its location linking the Mount Elgon highlands to the Lake Kyoga basin makes the district an essential transit and produce-marketing hub.

Geographically, Bukedea is bordered by Kumi District to the west and north, Bulambuli District to the east, Sironko and Mbale districts to the south-east, and Pallisa District to the south. The district spans low, sandy-loam uplands and extensive wetlands, with nearly 80% of its landmass draining toward the Lake Kyoga basin, supporting commercial rice cultivation, cattle rearing, and crop farming.

Administratively, Bukedea is organized into two parliamentary constituencies—Bukedea County and Kachumbala County—comprising 14 rural sub-counties, two town councils (Bukedea T.C. and Kachumbala T.C.), over 70 parishes, and more than 400 villages. The population has grown from 203,600 in 2014 to over 260,000 residents, driven by high birth rates and agrarian settlement in the fertile rice plains.

KAWA Uganda works in close partnership with the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), the District LC V Chairperson, and the District Education Officer (DEO) to accelerate digital learning and STEM pedagogy. Through KAWA Connect offline digital library servers, continuous teacher professional development, and student ICT Clubs, KAWA delivers modern e-learning across Bukedea’s primary, secondary, and vocational institutions.

Agrarian Economy & Trade

Smallholder agriculture underpins household livelihoods in Bukedea. Principal food crops include finger millet, sorghum, maize, beans, cassava, sweet potatoes, and groundnuts, while lowland paddy rice, cotton, sunflower, and sesame (simsim) generate vital commercial income. Cattle, goat, and poultry rearing supplement household wealth, with roadside markets channeling agricultural surplus to Mbale, Pallisa, and Soroti.

Infrastructure & Social Services

Transport connectivity is anchored by the tarmac Mbale–Soroti highway, complemented by DRDIP-funded feeder roads. Piped water access under the Kolir Piped Water Project and rural electrification extensions continue to improve school operating environments. Health services are coordinated from Bukedea Health Centre IV, Kachumbala HC III, and Bukedea Teaching Hospital.
