2: 18-20. The behaviour of Christian slaves
Peter, like Paul, did
not query the existence of slavery in the Roman empire; there was no
possibility of such an entrenched and widespread system being changed at that
period of human history. But both Peter and Paul (Galatians 2:28-29, Philemon
v.l5-16) are concerned that a Christian slave should witness to Jesus Christ by
his behaviour and should be assured of his heavenly reward (2: 18~20). The
Greek word translated 'servant' in 2: 18 is the word commonly used for a
household slave. 2: 19-20 reflect the teaching of Jesus in Luke 6 :33 and
Matthew 5:11-12.
