Amuria District is located in Eastern Uganda, within the Teso sub-region, and has its administrative center in Amuria Town, which serves as the district’s political, commercial, and social hub. Officially established in 2005, Amuria was carved out of the former Katakwi District and comprises an area of approximately 1,382 km², characterized by gently undulating plateaus and fertile soils that define its agrarian landscape.

The district is administratively composed of two counties—Amuria County and Orungo County—and is divided into nine sub-counties plus Amuria Municipality. The sub-counties include Abarilela, Asamuk, Kuju, Morungatuny, Obalanga, Acowa, Kapelebyong, Wera, and Orungo, which are further subdivided into parishes and villages that support grassroots governance and service delivery.

Amuria has experienced steady population growth over recent years, rising from an estimated 69,400 in 1991 to 183,348 in 2014, with more recent estimates suggesting a population of around 248,500 by 2023. Though primarily rural—where over 95% of residents live in villages—Amuria Town itself has grown to approximately 8,900 people (2020 estimate), drawing inhabitants due to trade, security, and service availability.

Economically, the district is overwhelmingly dependent on subsistence agriculture and animal husbandry, with over nine in ten households engaged in these activities. Major staples include cassava, millet, sorghum, groundnuts, simsim, and maize, while livestock—predominantly cattle, goats, and poultry—remains critical to rural household livelihoods. Modest commercial activity and periodic cross-border trade with neighboring districts like Soroti, Kaberamaido, and Napak complement the agrarian economy.

Infrastructure in Amuria includes the important Soroti–Amuria–Abim–Kotido Road, which serves as a vital transport corridor linking the district to Teso and Karamoja. Amuria Municipality benefits from piped water schemes and market facilities, although many rural areas still face challenges in reliable clean water, reliable road access, and electricity coverage.

The social services sector in Amuria is anchored by several health centres and a general hospital that cater to both maternal and child health, although resources remain scarce relative to the growing needs of the population. Educational facilities include numerous primary schools, secondary schools, and vocational institutes that support the youth population, though class sizes are large and infrastructure sometimes substandard.

Governance in Amuria is overseen by a District Council led by an LCV Chairperson, supported by a Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) and technical staff. Representation in Parliament is provided through Members of Parliament for both the district’s constituencies, ensuring that local interests are articulated at the national level.

In recent years, the district government has prioritized budgeting and planning for improved agricultural productivity, value-addition, road maintenance, and water and sanitation services, in alignment with Uganda’s National Development Plan and the National Budget Framework priorities. The district’s growth aspirations include expanding irrigation schemes, enhancing agro-processing at the local level, and improving educational and health facilities to serve a rising and youthful population.

Its strategic road links, growing township, and committed local leadership indicate positive momentum, despite persistent challenges in rural access, service provision, and economic diversification.
