Transforming Education Through Technology and Capacity Building

In a remarkable initiative aimed at bridging the digital divide, Kisubi Associated Writers Agency (KAWA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Sports and the Uganda Communications Universal Service Access Fund (UCUSAF) conducted an intensive Information Computer Technology (ICT) training for primary school teachers during the holidays in May 2023.

The training, conducted at Entebbe Secondary School, Entebbe Comprehensive Secondary School, Airforce Secondary School, and Entebbe Girls Secondary School, successfully equipped 502 teachers from 44 different primary schools across Entebbe Municipality with vital ICT skills over the course of four days.

The training was meticulously designed to cover a wide array of topics, including the basics of ICT, the role of ICT in education, and practical tutorials in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, as well as techniques for internet research and communication.

This empowering initiative was led by Moses Wamanga, a Senior Education Specialist from KAWA, alongside KAWA’s Executive Director, Engineer Paul Rukundo. The training team also included Richard Wamboka, Isaac Matsanga, Peter Nambafu, Lawrence Mubiru Galiwango, Connie Auma, Moses Mbaziira, and Edith Kugonza, all of whom brought their expertise and passion to the initiative.

The closing ceremony, which attracted extensive coverage from prominent media houses such as UBC, NTV, Urban TV, BBS TV and various radios, was graced by Hon. Nyombi Thembo, the Director for UCUSAF at UCC. Other distinguished guests included the mayor of Entebbe, Mr. Fabrice Brad Rulinda, along with his political leaders, as well as the Town Clerk of Entebbe Municipal Council, Mr. Mugisha Emmanuel Gacharo.

A strong supporter of this initiative, Madam Nalubega Joyce, the vision bearer of the project and the leader of the technical team from the Entebbe Municipal Education Department, also attended the ceremony. Her presence underscored the project’s commitment to elevating the ICT competence of teachers, in order to enhance the quality of education.

The collaboration between Ministry of Education and Sports, KAWA and UCC/UCUSAF signifies a significant step towards integrating ICT into the Ugandan educational landscape, particularly at the primary school level. This project is a testament to their shared belief that equipping teachers with ICT skills is crucial for preparing students for the digital age.

By training teachers, the initiative effectively impacts the education of thousands of students, providing them with a comprehensive and modern education that embraces digital literacy. This training has created a ripple effect that will undoubtedly reach many corners of the community.

As Uganda continues to strive for digital inclusivity, this initiative serves as a beacon of progress, signifying the country’s commitment to leveraging technology to elevate its education sector. The success of this endeavor has set a precedent for other regions to follow, marking a major milestone in Uganda’s journey towards ICT-driven education.
