Types of trade union organizations
(a) Craft unions: This is the workers organisation which draws its membership from only certain particular type of skills of the 'workers across the industries or sections like engineers, accountant etc.' Members of such trade unions come from different industries and sectors but are only brought together by the common skill or qualifications.
(b) Industrial Unions
These are worker's organisations which draw members from all the employees of a particular industry irrespective of the skill or type of job done by the workers. Members of this type of organisation have different skills but must all belong to the same industry or firm.
(c) General Unions
These are workers' organisation which accepts any worker into membership regardless of the place of work, nature of the job or skill or qualification for the worker. The major requirement to belong to such a trade union is for one to be a worker anywhere. This type of union usually has a large unskilled membership and tend to overlap one another.
(d) White collar union
Those workers organizations for only skilled or non manual workers only. This type of trade union mainly covers administrative and clerical staff who are salaried employees. Such unions are common in teaching (Uganda Teachers Association), banking, civil service, local government etc. Some are organized on the basis of an industry e.g. banking and teaching unions while others are organized across the industrial structure.
(e) Closed shop union
This is a type of trade union which controls employment of workers in certain industries or firms, a worker must first belong to it before he/she can be employed in a certain industry or firm
(f) Open shop union
This is a kind of trade union whose membership is not as pre-requisite for gaining or retaining employment in a particular firm or industry. ..
