Reasons for the weakness of trade unions in LDCs

1.               Small Membership:- There is lack of keen interest in trade unions by the workers. As a result, trade unions represent a small proportion of the total labour force and are therefore in a weak bargaining position.

2.               Weak leadership/management:- Trade unions have weak leadership. They fail to present their wage claims in a correct way and do not have correct approaches. In most cases they fail to justify their demands for higher wages. This is because the leaders are not very knowledgeable.

3.               High rate of unemployment:- Because of the open unemployment in LDCs, trade unions fear to ask for wage increase. This is because the workers can be replaced any time especially the unskilled workers,

4.               Financial difficulties: Trade unions always have financial difficulties which results into failure to sustain strike for a short time and call off or report for work due to lack of money for Striking workers to survive without their employers.

5.               Government interference:- In most cases government interferes with the running of trade union affairs because strikes are always declared illegal.

6.               Disunity in the trade Unions:-Tribal, religious, political and racial differences cause disunity in the trade unions, making them very weak.

7.               High proportion of migrant labour;- Workers do not stay in, a job for longtime. The composition of labour force changes continuously making the organisation of trade unions difficult. This weakens the trade unions.

8.               lack of commitment by leaders:- Trade unions are normally used as a springboard for the achievements of big positions in a government. The leaders usually lack interest and commitment in the trade union affairs, Their interest is only to achieve a big post in government which compromises their role.

9.               Large subsistence sector: There are few salaried and wage earners in LDCs to warrant the need for trade union activities more so in the subsistence sector.

10.         lack of loyalty by members:- There is general apathy and illiteracy among the workers. Majority of the workers do not know their rights. Besides, some of them are not bothered by the trade union activities

13.         Discrimination.- Trade unions are weakened by discrimination amongst workers based on races, religion, sex etc.

14.         Weak industrial sector:- The industrial sector in LDGs is not well developed and the activities of trade unions are also not strong.

15.         Availability of other sources' of income or earnings:-In LOGs workers do not depend only on their place of work for their earnings. They receive their earnings from several sources, which make them reluctant to strongly advocate for wage increase,

16.General weak economic performance:¬Generally, the economies of LDCs are not strong and as a result, trade union activities tend to be weak.

Poor' communication systems:- The infrastructure in LDCs is not _ well developed which makes it very difficult to mobilise workers for a common cause
