15:1-5. Jesus taken before Pilate
As soon as the
Sanhedrin could be formally convened, after dawn, there was a hurried meeting
at which the leaders 'made their plans'. Jesus was taken immediately to the
Roman procurator (whose court was usually in Caesarea on the coast but who came
to Jerusalem during the Passover in case of any trouble). It is clear from the
question of Pontius Pilate (15:2) that the religious leaders presented a charge
against Jesus which made him appear a political agitator to the procurator, to
whom a charge of blasphemy would have been meaningless.
