Population
Switzerland has a total population of 7,519,000 people (2005). With a total area of 41,284sq.km her population density is 182.1 people per square kilometre. The population is unevenly distributed according to climate, industrialization and urbanization.
High population densities of over 200 people per sq.km are found in industrial areas and tourist resort centres. Areas with a density of 100 -200 people per sq.km are mainly in the Swiss plateau and the valleys of the Alpine region. Areas with a density of 50-59 people per sq.km are found in the colder areas of the Swiss plateau.
Population densities of 0-49 people per sq.km are largely in the highland areas of Alps and the Jura. Those with nil density are on the mountain peaks of the Swiss Alps. See the map of Switzerland showing population distribution.
