Floods
Floods result from a continued heavy down pour causing the water into streams to spill over the banks into the farmlands. It can also occur when the soil cannot absorb all the water from the rains. Floods have also been aggravated by random destruction of forests by man.
1. Destroy crops leading to food shortage
2. Destroy human and animal life.
3. Cause soil destruction .
4. Cause water borne diseases.
5. Uproot crops especially on high slopes.
6. Cause an economic setback to a country.
Floods can be controlled by:-
i. Construction of levees of Mississippi in U.S.A.
ii. Afforestation and re-afforestation programme on the slopes of mountains to check on the speed of the water flow.
iii. Building dams across rivers.
iv. Building dykes like in Netherlands.
