Man-induced environmental hazards
Among the most serious man-induced environment hazards are:-
1. Desertification.
2. Pollution
3. Soil erosion.
Soil erosion is the removal of top soil. It is caused by:-
1. Overgrazing.
2. Cultivation of river banks
3. Poor methods of farming for example monoculture.
Soil erosion results into:-
i. Loss of soil fertility
ii. Increase in floods resulting from high volumes of surface run off
iii. Low farm production.
iv. Reduced duration of flow of streams.
v. Lack of water for both industrial and domestic purposes.
vi. Retardation of economic developments of a country.
Drought can be controlled by:-
i. Establishing irrigation schemes.
ii. Afforestation and re-afforestation programs to induce rainfall.
iii. Rationing water.
iv. Establishing water reservoirs such as dams.
v. Mass education on environmental conservation and management.
vi. Encouraging the cultivation of drought resistant crops.
