5:19-29. The authority of the Son
Jesus explicitly assets his divine Sonship and his
complete union with the Father. His union with God the Father is shown in
complete obedience (5: 19). The Father loves the Son and shows him all that he
himself is doing, so that the Son shares the Father's work. To the Son is
entrusted the power to raise the dead and give them life. The judgement of the
world is entrusted to the Son. Honour shown to the Son is honour shown to the
Father. The Son gives eternal life not only to those living in the world but
will give it to those who have died. The resurrection of all believers at the
end of the present age, the subject of 1 Corinthians 15, is referred to in
5:28-29.
