The witness of the Baptist is continued. His subordinate role in comparison with that of Jesus is emphasized. The Baptist knew that the one whose coming he proclaimed was from God; John the Baptist could be described as the last and greatest of the prophets of Israel but compared to the Incarnate Word of God, he was a mere human messenger, not good enough to do the humblest work of a slave for the Christ (1 :27).
