20:24-29. Thomas
It seems quite clear that the final event of the
first draft of this gospel was the climactic confession of faith in the risen
Christ, by Thomas, the con-clusion of the gospel then following in 20 :30-31.
In Thomas, the relation¬ship between seeing and believing is raised for the
last time. Thomas sees and believes and his confession of faith brings us back
to the opening statements of the gospel about the Incarnation, in the prologue,
and Jesus' reply to Philip in 14:8-11. To know Jesus Christ is to know God.
Thomas' confession of faith points to the necessity for the disciples to
believe without doubting so that they may witness to others.
