18: 12-27. Jesus before Annas: Peter’s denial
John gives no account
of Jesus being taken before the Sanhedrin but instead describes the questioning
of Jesus by an influential Sanhedrin member, Annas, ex-High Priest and
father-in-law of Caiaphas who was in office at that time, 11:49-50. No account
is given of any questioning Caiaphas although Annas sent Jesus to him (18:24)
and from Caiaphas house, Jesus was sent to Pilate, 18:28. Annas questioned
Jesus about his disciples and his teaching (18: 19) to which Jesus replied that
he had always taught in public and what he had taught was well known (18 :20-
21). Jesus was struck by a guard for his bold reply (18:22-23). Peter's denial
of Jesus occurred during Jesus' questioning by Annas. John gi es an explanation
not found in the synoptic gospels of how Peter was able to enter the courtyard
of the High Priest's house (18: 15 -16); we can only guess at the identity of
'that other disciple'.
