A Pharisee who was not trying to trap Jesus came to him with a serious question (12 :34). When we remember that the rabbis counted 613 laws in the Torah, his question was understandable. By putting together two quotations from Deuteronomy 6:4-5 and Leviticus 19:18 Jesus identified the significance of the entire Law. After this, the attempt to trap Jesus with questions was given up because he could not be trapped in this way.
