BLESSINGS AND CURSES AS UNDERSTOOD IN TRADITIONAL AFRICA
Blessings were believed to be a direct reward of good
deeds or behaviour of the community. This was particularly in following their
customs and norms.
There was a deep belief that being in a good relationship
with members of the community was a source of blessings.
One who was in good relationship with the ancestors and
the departed members of the family was assured of blessings from such beings.
Africans believed that blessings could be evoked from the
spiritual world. This was through performing rituals which were religious in
nature like offering sacrifices.
In the same way, Africans believed that curses would be
averted ot diverted. This was by pleasing the spiritual world especially through
giving sacrifices.
The Africans believed that elderly people had the ability
to either bless or curse. Blessings came from being obedient to them and curses
from one's disobedience.
The Africans viewed curses as a form of punishment from
the spiritual world and the elders of the community. This was in the event
where such spiritual beings like God, gods and the ancestors could have been
wronged by human acts.
The Africans linked curses to disrespect of the spiritual
beings or objects. This was through talking ill of them or bad behaviour.
Curses were also linked to the breaking of blood pact. To
the Africans, this was a sign of lack of commitment on one's life and since an
act was done involving the spiritual world, breaking it would annoy such beings.
The Africans believed that burying a family member
indecently could cause curses. The belief was' that the spirit of such a person
would get annoyed and revenge on-the people.
Disrespect to sacred places and objects like the shrines
and beads could also cause curses.
