Anthropology
This is the study of existing social institutions and relationships. Although anthropologists are concerned with the societies of their own day and age, much of what they discover can be used in interpreting the past, especially where we have good reason to believe that societies in certain areas have not changed so much in recent-times.
By means of a detailed examination of cultural systems the ideas, beliefs and institutions of a given society anthropologists can tell us much about the settlement and growth of people in East Africa.
For example, important work has been done by anthropologists such as John Beattie on the Banyoro, Allan Jacobs on the Masai and Aidan Southall on the Alur. Of equal interest is the work of Professor Mbiti on African religions, in which he has attempted to explain African ideas about God, time and destiny.
