Preface
This eBook has been compiled to fill a wide gap that has been at hand for a long time in the broad coverage of East African history. Since society is dynamic, there is need for books that help both teachers and students feel comfortable with the changes in the examination requirements. The purpose of this book therefore is to enable history students appreciate the political, social and economic developments that have taken place in East Africa from the pre colonial period up to the post independence era.
Topics in the book have been arranged according to the teaching order followed by most history teachers in East Africa. The format is based on NCDC and UNEB history syllabi. There are 23 topics in this book, arranged in chronological order, starting with settlement on the East African coast and the migrations into the region.
The book ends with the events leading to independence of the three East African countries. Special features in the book include revision questions at the end of each chapter as well as the past paper questions for the last seventeen years.
For the sake of enabling students appreciate the subject this book starts with the meaning and the sources of history as well as their advantages and disadvantages however, teachers should not spend much time on such topics since they do not form part of the examinable topics.
