Results of the 1979 liberation war

Amin was toppled on the 11th April 1979. He fled to exile first in Libya then Saudi Arabia.
 
The UNLF government under Yusuf Lule took over the administration of Uganda after the fall of Amin
 
A military wing of the UNLF called the Uganda National Liberation Army replaced the Uganda army.
 
Many towns like Mbarara, Masaka, Kyotera and Kampala were heavily looted and destroyed.
 
There was massive loss of lives. All those who resisted were killed. Even innocent Ugandans were also killed during the general insecurity that occurred.
 
Many Amin's soldiers after the war were arrested and imprisoned. This was followed by the recruitment of a new Ugandan army.
 
Famine was experienced in 1980 because war had disrupted the normal production.
Justice replaced terror and the rehabilitation of Uganda' shattered economy was started by the UNLF government.
 
After the war, relationship between Uganda and other neighbouring countries normalized and were strengthened.
 
There was intermarriage between the Ugandans and Tanzanians. Many children were born to Tanzanian men and have continued to live to date.
 
Dr A M Obote who was toppled in 1971 returned back home and became President for the second time following the 1980 general elections.
 
Tanzania became a major player on Uganda's political stage from 1979 to 1981.
 
Several anti Amin fighting groups later went back to the bush to fight for liberation of Uganda against Obote's dictatorship.
