Preface
National Movements and New States in Africa has been written specifically for Advanced Level History students as well as first Year University students offering history. It therefore aims at the following:
First, to develop among students a knowledge of the national movements which led to the new states in Africa.
Second, to develop an understanding of the historical roots of the problems of modern Africa and sympathy for the various efforts being made to overcome them.
Third, to give students an opportunity to study a relatively short historical period in depth, which is approached thematically. The fourth is to stimulate thought and discussion by the use of historical case studies which have been selected within each topic from several regions of Africa.
There 48 chapters in this book ranging from introduction to African nationalism, the Italo-Ethiopian War, Impact of the Second World War on Africa, the Egyptian revolution, Pan Africanism and Neo Colonialism. It also covers the civil wars in Africa, the formation of political parties and their struggle for independence. The book ends with efforts to preserve African culture as well as the problems the continent faces such as poverty, corruption, refugees crisis, population explosion as well as coups that have distablized Africa since independence.
We have tried to make the book straightforward for all categories students to understand. This has been done by including a summary with many points at the end of each chapter; question and answer guides as well as pictures to arouse interest. Well aware of the danger of relying on carelessly authored and outlined pamphlets which have produced catastrophic results, this book takes intellectual thinking and presents ideas that arouse thinking to enable students discover for themselves, which is the basic learning requirement.
The book draws to the highest degree from the books of the same author, namely Political education Simplified, Volume One and Political Education Simplified, Volume two. In doing so, the author nurtures the progress of the students' skills in understanding and expressing historical and political ideas in a more rational and consistent approach from Ordinary level to Advanced level.
The content in this book has been gathered from diversified sources such as textbooks, almanacs, encyclopaedias, journals and magazines, my personal experience in class and lecture rooms in both learning and teaching as well as the research from papers presented in conferences in many parts of Africa visited. This research involved countless hours at the library, interviews with professionals and a trip to other countries.
The journey to write a completed book is strewn with triumphs, failures and near misses. The first challenge has been lack of funds to finance printing of the book; the big volume also proved very uneconomical to the publishers since at first there were two books which had to be combined.
We wish to register our deepest appreciation and heartfelt gratitude to the persons and bodies who rendered various forms of assistance to me throughout my research and preparation of this ebook book. We are deeply indebted to each of them for their dedication, co-operation, and support without which this task would not have been completed.
