Ghent

The town has a population of over 150,000 people. It is situated in the Flanders lying at the conference of two navigable Rivers , the Lys and the Scheldt. Its prosperity had much to do with its central position in the Flanders plain.
 
Functions
 
As for the functions, it is the third largest city in Belgium after Brussels and Antwerp. It is the focus of Railways and waterways. It is linked by the Temeuzen canal to the Scheldt Estuary, it is an important commercial centre owing to its product.

Industry

It is the chief Textile centre on Belgium favoured by the damp climate and the clean soft water of River Lys as well as the Abundant skilled labour supply.

The textile include cotton, linen and woolen products; carpets and Foot wear are important.

It now indulges on the manufacture of chemicals ie dye - stuffs, fertilizers, paper. It boasts of its metallurgical and glass ware industry.
