International migration

This type of migration involves crossing international boundaries. The movement of people outside the country is known as emigration and the people who leave are known as emigrants.  The movement of people into a country is known as immigration and the people who enter are known as immigrants.
The movement of people to other countries is sparked off by political factors, economic factors and religious factors, for example, between 1900 and 1920 over 14.5 million Europeans migrated to North America because of economic reasons.  Between 1971 and 1980 thousands of Ugandans migrated to the neighbouring countries and to Europe because of political instability in Uganda. In West Africa, thousands of West Africa have migrated to Nigeria because of better economic opportunities in Nigeria.
