Effects of mining on the environment
i. Land which has been mined and minerals exhausted is called derelict land. Most countries suffer from dereliction caused by open-cast methods of mining. This land is no longer productive. That is why mining is referred to as a "robber industry".
ii. Causes water pollution.
iii. The pits and piles of waste material are left behind when mining centres shift.
iv. May cause bad climatic changes. This can be done through the fumes and other chemicals which may destroy the Ozone layer.
v. Open-cast method of mining leaves deep holes which may be filled with water and create deep pools. This may result into human accidents.
vi. Causes soil erosion and land slides, because most cases the soil is weakened.
vii. Ore dust from the mines usually pollutes the environment.
viii. There is a permanent damage caused on the environment. The natural beauty of the landscape is destroyed.
