Research and discussion
Activity
1. What is the significance of the oracles of
Amos against the other nations?
2. Summarize the social evils which Amos
condemned in Israel and explain the basis of his condemnations.
3. Discuss this statement: 'Amos rejected all
forms of worship, therefore we do not need churches, public worship services
and religious ceremonies. '
4. From the book of Amos collect together all
the references to the following:
(a) his background and
earlier life in rural Judah
(b) the luxurious life
of the rich people of Samaria
(c) God's judgement on Israel.
5. Identify social evils in our country today,
and suggest what might be done to correct them.
6. Comment on any international situation which
you know about in which inhumanity has been shown to one nation by another.
7. Discuss these situations in the light of the
teaching of the book of Amos and the New Testament:
(a) Jane was a
prominent member of the local Church. She was married with four children. Her
husband was doing well in a job in the bank and Jane herself had a-job as a
secretary. She wanted help with running their home, which was modem and well
furnished, so she told her sister to send her a young niece who had left
primary school and had not found a place in secondary school. The girl came and
worked for Jane but did not receive any wages. She was given food and a place
to sleep but did not have regular hours of work, sometimes beginning work at 5.30
a.m. and finishing at 11 p.m. Jane said, 'She doesn't need wages; she is one of
our family.'
(b) At a big meeting to
raise money for the building of a new church, a local business man was
applauded for presenting a cheque for Shs5, 000. The people there knew that he
made his money from illegal brewing, cheap labor on his farms, and smuggling,
but they took his cheque happily. 'We will put up a special wall-plate to
commemorate his generosity’, they said.
(c) 'I can't get a
driving license without bribing the examiner', said John. "There is
nothing I can do about it, so I am going for my test with Shs 1,000 in my
pocket to make sure I pass.'
