Some commentators suggest
that the last five verses of the book of Amos were from a later prophet,
because the hope expressed is in contrast to the disaster predicted in so many
other utterances. There is no convincing reason why Amos should not have
prophesied hope after the judgement, however. After Israel's sin has been
punished, there will be a great restoration of the people under a new king of the
line of David. The implication is that there will no longer be two divided
kingdoms but a united people. Their lives will be rich with material blessings
and they will be established in their land.
