This chapter contains a
number of utterances of hope on themes already introduced by Isaiah. The
opening verse says that Jeremiah was still imprisoned in the courtyard of the
royal palace as the Babylonians prepared for the final assault on the city.
33: 1-13. Although the city
faces imminent destruction and the land is ravaged, the prophet looks to the
future when there will be peace, security and prosperity, gladness and
rejoicing again.
33: 14-18. The promise of a
future righteous king, a descendant of David, is reiterated.
33: 19-22. The covenant with
David is referred to.
33:23-26. God's faithfulness
to his covenants with his people and with David, is affirmed.
