Ezekiel has a distinctive
understanding of the restoration of the people of Israel, which differed in
some ways from what we have read in the other prophetic books. He looked
forward to the restoration of the original twelve tribes, each being given their
rightful portions of land. The Temple would be rebuilt, and in chapters 40-43
very detailed instructions for this are set out. In the chapters following
instructions for Temple ritual are given. Sacrifices would be made only by the
descendants of Zadok, the high priest in the time of Solomon, and the Levites
would serve the Temple in other ways. The ruler would lead the people in
offering sacrifices. Ritual purity would be maintained. God would cause a holy
river to flow from the Temple into the land, bringing new life even to the Dead
Sea.
