The true humanity of Jesus in John's gospel
Mark showed his readers
the true humanity of Jesus and so does John.
Both writers may have
been concerned with the problem of Docetism arising in the Church. John says
that Jesus was thirsty and tired (4 :6-7), grieved and wept (11 :33-35), was
deeply troubled (12:27), joined in the festivities of a wedding (2:2), was
hungry (4:31). The statement of 1 :14 that the Word (of God) was incarnate,
underlies John's understanding that Jesus was fully human. The fact of Jesus'
death is made very clear in 19:31-35.
