14:3-9. Jesus anointed at Bethany
The woman's action
anticipated prophetically Jesus' approaching death. It was the Jewish custom to
anoint a dead body as a sign of respect. Later her action would be seen in
stark contrast to the appalling brutality which Jesus would experience in the
manner of his death; his body was buried without further anointing, according
to Mark's gospel. Jesus accepted the honour and devotion which the woman gave
him and rebuked those who criticized her
