Weaknesses of the OAU charter
· The OAU charter is a document that outlines the aims, principles and activities, powers of the organs and every in the organization. It binds together all the OAU member countries in their activities.
· The OAU charter came into force on May 23rd 1963 after signing the treaty by 32 African heads of states.
· The OAU charter has 33 provisions that are respected by all member countries.
· The charter has no provision made for the co-ordination of all African states militarily achieve liberation of Africa.
· The nature of the political and diplomatic co-operation has not been precisely clear to all members.
· The principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of independent states has left dictatorial regimes to violate human rights without fear.
· The rights and duties of member countries were not clearly spelt out in the charter.
· The charter does not have any provision for expulsion or suspension of a member state on whatever ground.
· The charter does not clearly state the difference between an issue that is clearly domestic to a member state and that which is Pan African.
· The OAU does not impose any trade embargo to a member country, which misbehaves one, which fails to pay membership fee.
