Political parties provide people with various leaders and programmes to choose from. In this case, the freedom of assembly and freedom to choose leaders, which is one of the basic principles of democracy, are fulfilled.

Leadership Recruitment

Parties recruit leaders from all over the country into their ranks as party members and officials. When the party eventually takes over state power, these members and officials become leaders of a society.

Political Communication: The decisions made by government are passed back and explained to the people through parties. This helps people to know what is going on in the country.

Political Integration: Parties assist in integrating people of different regions, religious and ethnic backgrounds into a single political organ hence national unity.

Political Modernization: In order for a party to maintain itself in power and ensure popular support, effort is put on the establishment of schools, hospitals, roads, and industries. which eventually lead to a high standard of living for the people.

Policy Formulation: Parties play an important role in formulating policies necessary for the development of the society. These policies originate from the party manifestos which different parties come up with to assure the masses of what they are to offer.

Fight against Colonialism: During the period of colonialism, African political parties played a very important role in the struggle for independence.

Financing Campaigns: Parties solicit for funds and finance campaigns. The normally come from the sale of party cards, fundraising activities and also from friends within the country and abroad.
