Types of desert surfaces
Rocky desert:
This consists of large stretches of bare rocks, swept, clear off land and dust by the winds. The exposed rocks are thoroughly smoothened. Such areas are bare and rocky, Examples are in the Sahara include Hamada el Hamra in Northern Libya and Hamada Guir on the Algeria-Morocco border.
Stony desert:
This is a desert landscape whose surface is covered by boulders and angular pebbles. This consists of existence sheet of angular pebbles and gravel’s which winds are unable to blow off. They are also formed due to diurnal temperature changes. Stony deserts are called Reg in Algeria, and Senir in Libya and Egypt.
Sandy desert:
This is an undulating plain of sand produced by wind deposition. There are vast stretches of undulating sand dunes. These take on different patterns depending on the direction of the prevailing wind. Sand deserts are inaccessible because they are usually in the middle of hot deserts. It is called Erg in the Sahara.
Badlands:
These develop mainly in the semi desert areas as a result of water erosion produced by violent rainstorms. The land is broken by extensive gullies, which are separated by steep ridges. They are usually heavily eroded areas that cannot actually be used for agriculture or any other beneficial economic activity.
Desert landforms are as a result of a combination of factors like insufficient rainfall a rapid rate of evaporation, wind action, water action.
