Seining

Seine nets have intermediate features between trawl and drift nets. The nets are kept floating vertically in the ocean. The nets have weights at the bottom to keep them straight and cocks at the top to keep them floating. A shoal of fish is surrounded by the net. This type of seining is known as beach seining. Purse seines are similar to trawl nets but they are smaller. They are more convenient for use by small boats. The net has long ropes attached to fishing boats. Once a shoal of fish is at the centre of the net, the ropes are then drawn to a stationary boat or ship.
