Montane climate
Montane climate occurs on the higher plateau and high mountains of Africa. It is associated with low temperatures due to the high altitude and the normal lapse rate. The characteristics of the Montane climatic region are:
The region is associated with low temperatures which decrease with increasing altitude.
Relief rain is received on the windward side and little or no rain on the leeward side.
High rainfall of about 1000-1500 mm is received.
High humidity in the atmosphere.
High levels of 4800m above sea level are covered by snow.
The rainfall intensify varies according to altitude such that rainfall is heavier in the middle of the slopes and less on top of the mountain.
The Montane climatic conditions are experienced in the following areas:- Ethiopian highlands in Ethiopia; Drakensberg mountains in South Africa; the Cameroon highlands in Cameroon; and the Futajalon highlands in West Africa. Adamawa ranges in Cameroon.
The economic activities carried out in the highlands areas are:-
Mining takes place especially in the extraction of Iron Ore, Copper e.t.c
Agriculture which involves growing of highland crops like wheat, Barley, Coffee.
Tourism due to impressive mountain Scenery. Mountaineering and recreational activities especially on the Drakensberg.
Lumbering due to the presence of forests.
Trade is carried out since mountainous areas are highly populated.
There is high demand for manufactured goods.
Hunting and gathering of Wildlife and fruits respectively.
