Lagoons

A lagoon is an enclosed calm and shallow seawater or Lake that is cut off from the main land by a sand bar. Formed at the same time with sandbars, spits and Deltas. Long shore drift and the waves deposit sand in the Bay or river mouth.

Sand, shingle, silt, mud and other materials accumulate at the bay, forming barriers across a Bay or river mouth hence enclosing a water body behind it called a lagoon.

Coral deposits may also occur a long the coastline during the formation of the lagoon. They are common along the W. African coastline. The Ports of Lagos in Nigeria and Abidjan in Ivory coast are on the Lagoon areas.

Wave-Deposited Landforms. These landforms were deposited by waves. A Sandbars connect the small islands on this beach on Thailand. B A barrier island is a long narrow island. It forms when sand is deposited by waves parallel to a coast. It develops from a sandbar that has built up enough to break through the water surface. A barrier island helps protect the coast from wave erosion.
