Block mountains and Grabens

A block mountain is an uplift bordered by faults on one or more sides. There are different theories that geographers use to explain the formation of Block Mountains. They include the theory of relative sinking, topographical inversion and the theory of general uplift.

However, the common idea is that a block mountain can be formed on the sides of a rift valley and therefore the formation may be related to rift valley formation. This involves mainly the compressional forces.
