The value of Highlands on the people of that area

Presence of minerals such as Chrone, Iron and other building materials promote mining industry. The process of vulcanicity, which brought variable minerals to the surface, formed the mountain.

Mountains contain rocks which are grained to provide stones and gravel used in building
 
Watershed for most important rivers and streams. Because so much precipitation falls on the mountain slopes, many rivers have their head ways in the Mountains. Examples are the Blue Nile and river Atbara in Ethiopia.
 
Agriculture takes place due to fertile and well-drained soils. Coffee and Wheat growing is common. Cattle, Goats and other animals are kept. The cool conditions are favourable for settlement.
 
The country gets foreign exchange from tourists, timber and agricultural exports.
 
Forestry takes place on the mountain slopes, which are covered, by forests. The lumber industry in such a region depends on the timber in the mountain areas.
 
Provision of employment to the people who work in the lumbering industry.
 
Tourism also takes place due to impressive mountain scenery. Each year thousands of people vacation in mountainous areas to camp, hike, climb or just to enjoy fresh air and spectacular views.
 
Mountains influence rainfall formation on the windward side. The Eastern part of Ethiopian Highlands receives much rainfall.
 
Some areas are used for wildlife conservation. This has led to the establishment of game reserves and parks.
 
Production of hydroelectric power. Because of the steep slopes and abundant water flow, the mountain area makes a good location for hydroelectric power plants, which convert the energy of running water into electric power.
