Implications of the Population Structure
- The high proportion of people below the age of 15 years limits the size of the labour force since these do not constitute a working population.
- High problem' of dependence burden since the population is dominated by people below the working age.
- Large proportion of resources is spent on feeding dependant population which leads to the diversion of resources for development.
- Consumption patterns are dominated by the young who require a lot of social infrastructure.
- Problem of feeding as the population is mainly made up of non-producers.
- Unfavourable BOP as the economy gets involved in high importation of goods to suit the consumption patterns of the youth without a corresponding increase in exports.
- Since the majority of the people are based in the rural areas engaging in agricultural activities, there is a likelihood of rural urban migration with all its negative consequences.
- High population growth rate leads to low educational levels due to lack of adequate resources for training and education.
- Since the majority are women, there is a decline in labour supply which retards economic development.
