JESUS' ATTITUDE TOWARDS UNCLEANLINESS

  (Mark 1:40ff)

Jesus was born in a Jewish community where the law of purification was strongly upheld meaning that he had to follow those laws.

However, he contradicted some of the ways the Jews treated those who were considered the outcast or the social misfit.

Jesus had pity on a leper man as he felt that he was in great pain and a helpless situation. Jesus touched the leper man with his hands without fear of being contaminated as opposed to the common belief among the Jews.

Besides, he showed his readiness to help the leper man out of his pain. He accepted the man's request to heal him.

Jesus cured the leper man of his sickness by simply commanding him to be clean and it happened.

By curing the leper man, Jesus showed that he loved and cared for the abandoned people. Jesus had time to speak with the leper man before sending him away. He spoke well as they parted ways.

Jesus instructed the cured man to keep quiet about what he had seen and what had happened to him.

However, he instructed the leper man to go straight to the priest for examination so that he could be declared clean.

Besides, Jesus told the leper to offer sacrifice as demanded by law in order to prove that he was cured.

On many occasions, Jesus emphasized that people with ailments needed more comfort instead of isolating them.

To him, a skin disease was a mere sickness with no connection whatsoever with in ones spiritual life.

He emphasized that physical impurity or one's physical appearance had nothing to do with his or her spiritual life.

Jesus showed that purification needed one's belief and acceptance of the words of God. Therefore, it is rather an act of faith than a ritual.

Jesus believed that the sick people needed doctors more than the healthy ones emphasized that he had come to set everyone free form their bondages.

Jesus urged every believer to help the sinners get back to God assuring them that he had come purposely for that.

Jesus pointed out that evil forces have no place in the heavenly kingdom.
