Impact of the Suez canal war on Egypt
1. Egypt gained complete control of the Suez Canal. She won success over the canal by defying the USA, Britain and France.
2. The canal then passed into the hands of the Egyptians and it became more gainfully run. Major repairs were carried along the canal to enable supertankers to use it- Revenue collected from the Suez Canal stepped up many folds.
3. Nasser emerged from the war stronger than ever. The war confirmed him in his place, and made him a popular revolutionary leader and a military victor.
4. Therefore, as a sign of good will, his picture was hanged in many Arab capitals.
5. At that time, Nasser had emerged not only as the defender of Egyptian nationalism but also as the focal point of Arab struggle against foreign influence in the Middle East.
6. The canal war also made Nasser a real defender of non-alignment. Before 1956, Nasser was following the policy of "post neutralism".
7. Furthermore, the Soviet Union, in a move to capture Egypt's support, invited Nasser to Moscow. Nasser invited the Soviet leader, President Kruschev to attend its inauguration.
8. Therefore, judging from the Cold War which was going on between the west and the east, the visit of Nasser to the USSR, and the acceptance of Moscow to finance the Aswan High Dam, it indicated a big Russian victory in the Arab world.
9. Not only that but also because of Egypt's success in the canal war, Syria entered into a political union with Egypt on 1.2.3958. Yemen became loosely attached to it in March on 1958.
10. Last but not least, the war succeeded in strengthening the Egyptian nationalism. For instance, the soldiers in the battle field fought with courage and serious determination.
On the Negative side;
11. A huge quantity of arms recently bought from Czechoslovakia and the USSR was lost in the Sinai.
12. The Egyptian forces were made to withdraw from the Sinai. Anglo-French bombing destroyed Egyptian cities. Cairo and Portsaid were destroyed. Egypt lost many lives i.e. both civilians and soldiers were killed.
13. During wartime, the Suez Canal did not operate, and revenue got from it was lost. The unpreparedness and the faults in the Egyptian army were revealed.
