The Richard Toll scheme.

This scheme is located on river Senegal at the Delta.  This is where river Taoue flows and joins the Senegal river. A permanent dam on river Taoue was built in 1948.  Originally water would rush up to the Taoue river to fill the Blue Guiers during the seasonal flooding of the Senegal river.
The people used to hanness the river by building across a great earth made dam.  This would prevent water from the lake from flowing back into the river when the flood water receded.
Today there is a permanent dam.  The Richard Toll barrage.  The gates of the dam open to allow the flood waters into lake Guiers, the gates also close during the dry season to prevent tidal sea water flow from flowing into river Taoue and lake Guiers.
5000 ha of land was enclosed at the confluence of the Senegal and Taoue river this was done using a long dyke which is part of the scheme a pumping station was installed and drainage channels were also put in place .  This irrigated has over 150 km of canals.  The water is pumped out of the lake into the enclosed area when need arises.  It flows by gravity to the different parts of the scheme.
