God's goodness to Israel.
In
chapters 7 and 8 there are strong warnings to the Israelites not to forget
God's goodness to them: 'When you have all that you want to eat and have built
houses to live in and when your cattle and sheep, your silver and gold, and all
your other possessions have increased, make sure that you do not become proud
and forget the LORD your God who rescued you from Egypt where you were slaves'
(8: 12-14). 'So then, you must never think that you have made yourselves
wealthy by your own power and strength. Remember that it is the Loan your God
who gives you the power to become rich' (8: 17-18). Israel has done nothing by
her own strength or merit and is not chosen by God because of her goodness, but
because it is God's will. The idea of God's upholding of his people is brought
out strongly in chapter 8. Chapter 8 verse 3 is quoted in the story of the
temptations of Jesus (Luke 4: 4). Jesus did not fall into the temptations which
Israel did.
