Israel's creed (Deuteronomy 26: 1-10)
After occupation of the
promised land has taken place, the Israelites are commanded to bring the first
of each harvest as offerings to God, acknowledging that he alone has provided
for their needs. The summary of Israel's history from the patriarchs to the
conquest of Canaan, given in verses 5-9, is recited before the altar of
sacrifice. It forms a creed, a statement of faith of the chosen people of God,
reaffirming their election, deliverance from Egypt and guidance under God to
the Promised Land.
