I. Explain what caused Paul to write the letter
to the Galatians and outline the main points that he made in his argument with
them.
2. Discuss how Paul's teaching on what makes a
person a Christian, is relevant to our modern situation.
3. Show ways in which Paul's teaching on the
freedom of the person who is 'in Christ' is relevant to modern Christians.
4. Explain the following quotations in their
context, and then show their relevance to Christian belief and practice in East
Africa today: 'If you allow yourselves to be circumcised, it means that Christ
is of no use to you at all' (Galatians 5 :2).
'Let the Spirit direct
your lives, and you will not satisfy the desires of the human nature'
(Galatians 5: 16).
'I have been put to
death with Christ on his cross' (Galatians 2:19).
5. From what Paul himself says in the letter to
the Galatians, explain how he understood his conversion experience and its
consequences.
6. What arguments did Paul present in defiance
of his authority as an apostle, in the letter to the Galatians, and why was he
forced to defend himself like that?
7. With reference to any church you know,
discuss what behaviour is considered proper and improper for a member of that
church.
8. Give examples of how Paul uses the Jewish
Scriptures in the letter to the Galatians; then explain why he speaks of the
curse of the Law.
9. Discuss any problem which you know about
which has arisen over tension between the old and the new in a church.
10. What advice might be given to an African community
who are making great efforts to raise a very large sum of money so that they
might build a great stone church building, modeled on a western style
cathedral? Refer, in your answer, to teaching from the letter to the Galatians.
11. If you can obtain any information about
Mother Teresa of Calcutta describe how her work reflects Paul's teaching in
Galatians 5 :22-24. . Is there anyone else whom you know whose life and work
reflect the same qualities?
