Problems faced in the exploitation of forests resources in Africa.

•    Limited capital to exploit the forest resources.
•    Trees do not exist in pure stands.  This makes their exploitation difficult.
•    Poor technology which results into ineffective exploitation as local rudimentary tools like pangas, axes, etc. are used.
•    Lack of skilled labour due to low levels of education.
•    Narrow local markets due to poverty among the people and low population.  This makes them turn to foreign markets.
•    Long distances to foreign markets which increases transport costs.
•    The hardwoods are extremely difficult to work on.
•    Muddy and dump ground due to heavy rainfall which makes transport difficult.
•    Poor transport and communication.  The roads, railway lines and water ways are not well developed.
•    Tropical diseases especially malaria which is common In areas with humid conditions.
•    The trees take a long time to mature especially those of the tropical rain forests type.
•    Poor government policy.
•    Political instabilities
•    Corruption / Embezzlement
•    Accidents
•    Lack of research
•    Thick and impenetrable undergrowth
•    Destruction of valuable species through charcoal burning, shifting cultivation and settlement
