Free zones
Industry in the Suez and Delta lands is being encouraged in another way by the creation of Free Zones. Within these zones foreign companies may import raw materials and export finished products free of charge. Telephones, roads, railways and water will be supplied and industries pay rent for the land. Once these facilities are completed progress should be rapid.
Already the Port Said Zone has been established with facilities for food warehousing, general ware- housing and manufacturing industry. Others will follow at Suez, Alexandria and Cairo. Many jobs will be created, particularly in the manufacture of component parts for industries in the Free Zones.
Typical of the increasing industrialisation in the lower delta lands is the appearance, now under construction, of a new industrial city called 'Tenth of Ramadan'. Situated 50 kilometres from Cairo on the Cairo-Ismailia road it will ultimately provide work and housing for some of Cairo's exploding population. This, together with the planned expansion of the canal ports of Port Said, Ismailia and Suez will take up most of Aswan's power and more besides. Thermal power stations are being built to bridge the gap, but an even more exciting possibility exists.
