Factors favouring sugarcane growing.

•    High and well distributed annual rainfall of more than 1800 mm. It needs rainfall every month.
•    High temperatures of 18oC and above.
•    Requires low lying tropical areas with alluvial soils.
•    Requires alluvial soils.
•    Enough water for irrigation in case of insufficient rains.
•    Requires cheap labour supply.
•    Enough capital to run the plantation.
•    Requires enough market and easy transport.
•     
c)(i)    Sugarcane growing and processing.
•    Sugarcane is planted at any time of the year but at different levels to ensure production all the time. It is grown from stem cuttings. These are usually planted by hand in furrows, and covered with soil.
•    Sugarcane takes about 18 months to be ready for cutting and another 18 months to be ready again.
•    After the 3rd cutting the land is left to farrow under a Legume called hemp.

•    When the cane reaches the factory it is weighed chopped and crushed by giant pressers which extract the juice.
•    The juice is treated with chemicals like lime and Sulphur.
•    The juice is cooled and the crystals are separated from the brown Molasses.
•    The sugar is allowed to dry and it is then graded and ready for export.
