Disadvantages

•    The problems of monoculture which leads to soil exhaustion and erosion.
•    The gestation period for some crops may be high.  Long time is taken before the first crop is harvested which is very costly because within this gestation period, no income is earned.
•    The dangerous  pests and diseases which destroy the crops.
•    Plantations are highly hit incase of the vagaries of weather like drought, too much rainfall and very strong winds.
•    The problems of over production which leads to price
•    fluctuations and low prices paid.
•    Too much capital is sunk in the plantations but in case of failure of the crop there is  a high loss.
•    It is detrimental to food production in the area since the energetic young men are taken to work in the plantation by the foreigners who provide capital.
•    The problem of profit repatriation where by the owners take back profits to their home countries
•    It also promotes neo-colonialism. This refers to the influence of developed countries over independent developing countries through economic, social and political approach.
